Situational Items
- If the enemy team has 3+ tanks, build Serylda's Grudge after your first item — the armor penetration and slow make your Q sweet spots significantly more threatening against high-armor frontlines.
- If you're facing heavy burst assassins like Zed or Talon, rush Sterak's Gage second for the shield — it gives you enough durability to survive their burst and retaliate with your own combo.
- If you're significantly ahead, add Collector for the execute passive — it converts near-kills into guaranteed kills and accelerates your snowball through the mid game.
- If the enemy team has excessive healing (Soraka, Yuumi, Kog'Maw), buy Mortal Reminder early to reduce their sustain before it becomes unmanageable in teamfights.

Overview
Aatrox is a powerful AD bruiser who thrives in extended fights. His abilities allow him to deal heavy area damage while sustaining through combat with healing and crowd control. When played correctly, Aatrox can dominate the lane and become a major threat in mid and late game teamfights. His strength comes from spacing well, hitting the sweet spots of his Q, and choosing the right moment to commit with his ultimate.
Strengths
- Excellent sustain during extended fights — Aatrox's passive healing scales with his total AD and activates on every ability hit, meaning the longer a fight lasts the more he heals relative to incoming damage. Against opponents without burst tools, this makes him effectively unkillable once his Conqueror reaches full stacks.
- Strong teamfight presence with area damage — His Q covers a large area across three casts, and the sweet spot true damage amplifies significantly in a grouped fight where multiple enemies are within range. His W pulls enemies into the sweet spot radius, creating forced grouping opportunities that amplify his total AoE output.
- Powerful mid game spike — With first item complete and Conqueror available, Aatrox's sustained damage in side lane duels becomes one of the highest in the top lane. His ultimate at this stage is a fight reset that most opponents cannot match.
- Good crowd control and zoning potential — His Q knockups create consistent crowd control chains in extended fights, and his W knock-in forces enemies to choose between stepping into his sweet spot or repositioning away from it. Both options favor Aatrox.
- Can heavily punish melee champions — Melee opponents must walk into his Q sweet spot range to trade, giving Aatrox the positioning advantage in almost every melee matchup. His passive healing makes the trades increasingly one-sided as the fight extends.
Weaknesses
- Can struggle against ranged champions that kite well — Ranged opponents can poke Aatrox from outside his Q range without entering sweet spot range, and his only gap-closer (E) has a cooldown that ranged kiting can outpace. In these matchups his passive healing rarely compensates for the sustained poke damage.
- Missing skillshots makes him much weaker — Every Q cast that misses removes a damage source and a healing proc simultaneously. A fight where all three Q casts miss outputs near-zero damage and zero healing, making him trivially killable by almost any opponent regardless of items.
- Needs good positioning to maximize damage — His Q sweet spots require landing the outer edge of each cast on the target, which demands specific spacing and prediction. Without correct positioning, his total damage output drops significantly even when abilities technically hit.
- Becomes vulnerable when abilities are on cooldown — Between Q rotations, Aatrox's damage drops to auto attacks and W, which is insufficient against most opponents at full health. Experienced players identify these cooldown windows and apply burst pressure specifically during them.
- Heavy crowd control can shut him down — Aatrox has no cleanse and no CC immunity in his kit. A stun or root mid-combo stops all three Q casts and denies the healing they would have provided, turning a winning trade into a losing one instantly.
Early Game
In the early game, focus on controlling the lane with the range and knockups from your Q. Try to take short, efficient trades and use your passive to recover health. Do not waste abilities unnecessarily, because Aatrox is much easier to punish when his cooldowns are down. Play around wave control, look for favorable trades, and build toward your first item spike safely.
Mid Game
Aatrox becomes much more threatening once he completes one or two core items. This is the stage where you want to pressure side lanes, contest neutral objectives, and look for skirmishes. With your ultimate active, you can outlast many champions in extended fights. Try to enter fights when your team can follow up and avoid overforcing without support.
Late Game
In late game teamfights, your job is to pressure the frontline while threatening anyone who steps too close. Aatrox can still carry fights if he finds good angles for Q sweet spots and uses his ultimate at the right moment. Be patient, watch enemy crowd control, and commit when the fight becomes chaotic enough for you to sustain through the damage.
How to Win
- Build lane priority with wave control
- Poke enemy down with short Q trades
- Force side lane with first item completed
- Join Herald or Dragon with ultimate available
- Melt frontline to open path for carries
- Reverse losing fights with ultimate
Tips & Tricks
- Try to hit the sweet spots of your Q for maximum damage and knockup value — the outer edge of each cast deals significantly more damage than the inner area, and landing all three sweet spots in a single rotation is your highest single-target burst window.
- Use E during your Q animation to reposition and improve your angle — dashing sideways or forward mid-Q-rotation repositions your hitbox relative to the target, making the next sweet spot easier to land on a moving opponent.
- Activate your ultimate before fully committing to a long fight — World Ender's damage amp and revive threat make opponents more hesitant to fight back, and activating it early maximizes the duration of the AD bonus and healing amplification.
- Do not waste W unless you can follow up with pressure or crowd control — the knock-in without a Q sweet spot follow-up deals minimal damage and gives the opponent time to reposition out of your Q range.
- Be patient in teamfights and wait for enemies to group up — your Q's AoE sweet spot is most valuable when multiple enemies are within range simultaneously, converting a single well-timed Q into a multi-target crowd control and damage event.
