Overview

Zilean is one of those supports that does not look flashy on the scoreboard but makes the enemy team want to surrender at 15. His kit is built entirely around enabling his teammates rather than making plays himself — Time Warp W gives the biggest single movement speed buff in the game, Rewind E lets him double cast his abilities in rapid succession, and Chronoshift R is a conditional revive that essentially gives a key teammate a second life if it is placed correctly. The double bomb stun is the core skill expression: throwing one bomb on a target and then immediately using E to halve the cooldown and throw a second bomb on the same target detonates both simultaneously and stuns for a long duration. It is not mechanically complex but timing it correctly under pressure while managing your W and ultimate is what makes good Zilean players stand out. He also has one of the best speed boosts in the game for enabling or preventing chases.

Strengths

  • Chronoshift ultimate gives a designated ally a full revive which is one of the most game-changing abilities any support can have
  • Double bomb stun is a long duration hard CC that can lock down any target when executed correctly
  • Time Warp W provides the largest single movement speed modifier in the game — both the speed boost and slow versions are extremely powerful
  • Rewind E halves all ability cooldowns which lets him double cast bombs, double apply W, and dramatically increase his overall ability output
  • Passive Time in a Bottle gives nearby allies bonus experience which helps his carry hit level power spikes earlier than the enemy

Weaknesses

  • Very low damage output especially early game — he cannot trade effectively and relies entirely on bomb poke for any offensive pressure
  • Double bomb stun requires landing two bombs on the same target quickly which can be interrupted or dodged by mobile champions
  • Chronoshift has a long cooldown and requires excellent target selection — using it on the wrong person or at the wrong time is a massive waste
  • Extremely positionally dependent — getting caught by an engage support like Blitzcrank or Leona before he can react usually results in his death and his ultimate going offline
  • Mana costs are relatively high for a support — spamming bombs and W without mana management leaves him useless later in the lane

Early Game

Zilean early lane is about consistent Q bomb harassment and setting up the double bomb stun when enemies overextend. His Q has good range and decent base damage which lets him poke the enemy bot lane safely from range. The double bomb pattern is the core trading tool: Q onto target, immediately E to reset Q cooldown, Q again onto the same target — both bombs detonate simultaneously for a long stun plus damage. Practice this in low stakes situations before trying it in critical moments. Use W to give your ADC movement speed when they need to chase or escape. The passive experience bonus from Time in a Bottle stacks over time and gives your ADC a meaningful early level advantage if you stay close to them consistently.

Mid Game

Mid game Zilean becomes a genuine teamfight enabler. His double bomb stun can lock down any target long enough for his team to follow up, and his ultimate becomes one of the most impactful abilities in any skirmish. Always keep track of who needs your ultimate most — usually the fed carry who is most likely to get focused. W Time Warp becomes extremely valuable at this stage for enabling chases after kills and for helping teammates escape bad situations. In objective fights use your double bomb to stun the enemy jungler during smite range to deny their smite or disrupt their concentration at critical moments.

Late Game

Late game Zilean is a support whose value scales directly with how important his ultimate target is. Chronoshift on a fully stacked hypercarry in a late game teamfight is one of the most impactful single plays any support can make — the enemy team burns everything to kill that carry and then they just come back. The key is always knowing in advance who gets the ultimate and communicating that to your team. Double bomb stun remains relevant late for picking off targets and interrupting channels. Time Warp W should be used proactively to enable your carries rather than reactively after they are already in trouble. Position safely at the back of your team and keep your ultimate available for the critical moment rather than wasting it on someone who was going to die regardless.

Tips & Tricks

  • The double bomb combo is Q, immediately E, immediately Q again — practice the timing until it becomes muscle memory because hesitating between casts gives the enemy time to move away.
  • Chronoshift has a visual indicator on the target — communicate with your team when ultimate is on cooldown so they know not to rely on the revive during that window.
  • Time Warp W can be used on enemies to slow them — use the slow version to prevent a diving assassin from reaching your carry or to stop a fleeing enemy.
  • Rewind E halves all cooldowns including W — using E after W means you can reapply the speed boost or slow much sooner than the base cooldown suggests.
  • Passive Time in a Bottle experience works in a radius — stay close to your ADC at all times in lane to maximize the experience advantage, especially before level 6 power spikes.
